Jul 21, 2021 6:00 PM

Virginia Tech Biological Systems Engineering will host in-person working group meetings for the Peak Creek Watershed Cleanup Plan. The watersheds being discussed are located in Pulaski County and the Town of Pulaski. Peak Creek flows into Claytor Lake, a reservoir on the New River. In the event of inclement weather, the working group meetings will be held Thursday, July 22, 2021 at the same times and location. PURPOSE OF NOTICE: Virginia Tech Biological Systems Engineering announces the first round of working group meetings to discuss potential water quality improvement projects and funding sources to be included in the Peak Creek Watershed Cleanup Plan. BSE will provide a handout of questions to better inform the IP development process. Public input is vital to developing a quality plan. DESCRIPTION OF STUDY: Virginia Tech Biological Systems Engineering seeks public input from interested persons on the development of a TMDL Implementation Plan (IP) for the bacteria Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) for the Peak Creek in Pulaski County. Peak Creek was listed as impaired on the Virginia’s 303(d) TMDL Priority List and Report due to violations of the State’s water quality standard for bacteria. The following are the names of the bacteria “impaired” streams, the length of the impaired segments and the reason for the impairments: Peak Creek, 1.83 miles, bacteria; Peak Creek, 1.66 miles, bacteria; Peak Creek, 0.51 miles, bacteria; Peak Creek, 0.39 miles, bacteria; Peak Creek, 2.10 miles, bacteria; Peak Creek, 2.10 miles, bacteria; Tract Fork, 1.24 miles, bacteria. The TMDL study for these stream impairments was completed in April 2004 and revised in August 2004. The document is titled: Fecal Bacteria and General Standard Total Maximum Daily Load Development for Peak Creek report. The report is available upon request by contacting Karen Kline at klinek@vt.edu. For additional information, please contact Karen Kline at the contact information listed below.
