TMDL Community Engagement Meeting - Watershed Cleanup Study for Roanoke River, Tinker Creek, and Wolf Creek
Apr 2, 2025 5:00 PM
The Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) will hold a community engagement meeting to provide updates on the development of a cleanup study, also known as a total maximum daily load (TMDL) for the Roanoke River, Tinker Creek, and Wolf Creek in Botetourt County, the City of Roanoke, and Roanoke County. DEQ is also seeking participants for a TMDL advisory group (TAG) for the study. Participation opportunities and obligations for TAG members will be the main topic of discussion for this meeting. Study development is necessary because all three listed streams are designated as impaired waters because monitoring data indicates that the waters do not meet Virginia’s water quality standards for Aquatic life. A 30-day public comment period will follow this meeting to accept comment on future additional sampling and allow interested parties to express their interest in joining the TAG. Information about this study can be found here: https://www.deq.virginia.gov/our-programs/water/water-quality/tmdl-development/tmdls-under-development. TMDL ADVISORY GROUP (TAG): During the initial public comment period, DEQ received requests to establish a TAG to assist in development of this cleanup study. Persons interested in participating should notify the DEQ contact person by the end of the comment period and provide their name, address, phone number, email address, and their organization (if any). A TAG is a standing group of interested parties established by the department for the purpose of advising the department during developing of the cleanup study. Any member of the public may attend and observe proceedings. However, only group members who have been invited by the department to serve on the TAG may actively participate in the group’s discussions. When DEQ convenes a TAG, all individuals who wish to participate on the TAG will be considered on a case-by-case basis. TAG members will be expected to attend all TAG meetings. Notification of the composition of the panel will be sent to all individuals who requested participation. PUBLIC MEETING: This public meeting will be held at 901 Russell Dr. Salem, VA 24153, VDEQ Blue Ridge Regional Office, Training Room on April 2, 2025 at 5PM. In the event of inclement weather, the meeting will be held on April 9, 2025, at the same time and location stated above. PUBLIC COMMENT PERIOD: April 2, 2025 to May 2, 2025 HOW TO COMMENT: DEQ accepts written comments by e-mail or postal mail. All comments must be received by DEQ during the comment period. Submittals must include the name, organization they represent (if any), mailing addresses and telephone numbers of the commenter/requester.
