TMDL Advisory Group (TAG) Meeting - Watershed Cleanup Study for Roanoke River, Tinker Creek, and Wolf Creek

PURPOSE OF THE MEETING: The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) will host the third TMDL Advisory Group (TAG) meeting for the Roanoke River, Tinker Creek, and Wolf Creek TMDL on Tuesday, August 19, 2026. The TAG members are assisting DEQ with development of a cleanup study, also known as Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL), to address benthic impairments of the Roanoke River, Tinker Creek, and Wolf Creek within Botetourt County, the City of Roanoke, and Roanoke County, which have been listed on Virginia’s § 303(d) list of impaired waters for failing to meet Virginia’s water quality standards due to an altered benthic community. The TAG meeting is open to the public and any member of the public may attend and observe the proceedings. Previously, nutrient and sediment were identified as probable contributors to the stress in the streams. The meeting will discuss algae data collected in 2025 and set expectations for data analysis for the upcoming rewrite of the Roanoke River Benthic Stressor Analysis.
